Certification and Accreditation

With the advent of Christian Montessori training comes many questions about accreditation, certification etc. To answer these questions and concerns we need to go back to the foundation of the movement. E.M. Standing, Montessori’s biographer, states in the introduction to “The Child in the Church” that “Montessori was convinced that this new method was placed in her hands for the advancement of the Kingdom of God.”
Montessori education is more than a methodology and it is more than just a philosophy of education – it is a spiritual way of living worked out in an educational setting.
Now having come to these conclusions – our work as Christians, our work as Montessorians is to advance the Kingdom of God. It is not about advancing Montessori education. It is about using this approach to advance the Kingdom of God. As some use music, some use art we use this wonderful way of learning and living to advance the Kingdom of God.
As much as I am grateful for AMI, AMS etc for their great work over many years of keeping this fantastic way of learning alive and vital we don’t share the same goal – advancing the kingdom of God. I wish them well but I wish God’s kingdom better. And it is returning this way of learning to its spiritual foundation and inspiration that truly can bring peace to the world through children whose lives are transformed by the Prince of Peace.
So with much trepidation (and a lot of future work) we have to create an accreditation and certification that honors these goals. As they say in the marriage vows – “not to be entered into lightly”, we soberly contemplate the necessity of these next steps. E.M. Standing also records Dr. Montessori saying that “her own method could only find its fullest expression when applied to the teaching of the Catholic faith.”
We wish to exclude no one, nor create a competing system but we wish to honor the calling we have been given – to live out our spiritual life to its fullest expression in this wonderful way of learning. We intend to be thoroughly Montessori and deeply Christian.
